    Type: Archeological/Reef

Bigovica is beautiful small bay located some 20 minutes boat ride from our base.

It is one of two protected archeological sites in Montenegro. During the period between 300 BC and late 17th century, the bay was active loading spot for merchant ships from all over Mediterranean. It was the most suitable access point to Old Bar (Stari Bar), the main settlement of the times. The trade was especially active in the periods of Roman and Venetian influence.

The knowledge of the location was greatly expanded after archeological survey project in 2013-14, conducted by Montenegrin and British archeologists. The artefacts recovered included various pottery, amphorae, Venetian glass, Roman coins, copper and led objects, tools…

At least 2 shipwrecks happened in the bay. One of the wooden ships was most likely destroyed by fire.

Location is suitable for all diver categories as well for Discover Scuba dives and snorkeling.
